OBITUARY DEATH OF THE REV. J. NISBET 1899 |
---|
Tho Rev. J. Nisbet, minister of the New Town Congregational Church, died, as announced in our obituary column, at New Town on the 9th May 1899. The deceased was well-known in Hobart and was 85 years of age. He was one of the oldest missionaries of the Congregational Church out of the 3,500 in the United Kingdom and the colonies.
He was a native of Barnet, in Hertfordshire, and received his ministerial training at Highbury College, near London. In the year 1836 Mr. Nisbet entered upon his ministerial work in Tasmania, and had had 58 years of uninterrupted service. The old church in Collins Street, at that time an Independent church, was the first place where the deceased laboured after his arrival in the colony. He afterwards had charge of the Church of Berea and was next transferred to New Town. In this latter locality he fulfilled his Master's mission for 40 years.
Mr. Nisbet was twice married. His first wife was the daughter of the late Henry Hopkins, and he lost his second wife in 1890.
On four different occasions Mr. Nisbet was elected chairman of the Congregational Union. He was first appointed to this position in 1872, and was re-elected in 1874. Eight years later he was again appointed chairman of the Union, and occupied the position for a fourth time in 1890.
The deceased had a family of seven daughters, all of whom are living. One is engaged in missionary work in China, another is married to Mr. P. Morrisby, formerly of Tasmania, who now resides in Johannesburg, South Africa, and a third is married to Mr. Downie, who is in one of the departments of the Civil Service. Four are still at home.
Mr. Nisbet was highly respected by all who knew him, and his death will be regretted by a wide circle of friends. He was a quietly consistent man, assuming no brilliant parts, but faithfully fulfilling his ministrations.
The funeral will take place on Friday afternoon, 12th May 1899, and the Rev. G. Clarke will preach a funeral sermon at the New Town Congregational Church on Sunday evening next.
